About Lake Kivu

Escape to the tranquil shores of Lake Kivu, a glittering jewel tucked between the rolling hills of Rwanda and the jagged peaks of the Congo. As one of Africa’s Great Lakes, Kivu offers a Mediterranean-style retreat in the heart of the continent. The lake’s unique “exploding” chemistry makes its waters incredibly calm and safe for swimming, free from the hippos and crocodiles found elsewhere.

Explore the lakeside towns of Rubavu and Karongi, where you can kayak between uninhabited islands, tour lush coffee plantations, or simply soak in the spectacular sunsets from a waterfront terrace. Whether you are seeking high-energy water sports or a peaceful end to your gorilla safari, Lake Kivu provides a restorative atmosphere that captures the soul.

What to Wear

For trekking, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, sturdy hiking boots, and rain gear. Gardening gloves are helpful for grasping vegetation. Earth tones are recommended.

Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry to Rwanda. Gorilla trekking occurs at high altitudes (up to 4,000m), so be aware of altitude sickness. Always follow your guide's instructions.
