About Nyungwe Forest National Park

As one of Africa’s oldest mountain rainforests, Nyungwe is a pulsating heart of biodiversity, sheltering 13 primate species, including chimpanzees and the stunning Rwenzori Colobus. The forest is a sensory masterpiece, filled with the mist of waterfalls, the fragrance of rare orchids, and the kaleidoscopic colors of over 300 bird species.

Beyond the primates, Nyungwe offers the exhilarating Canopy Walkway—a suspension bridge 70 meters above the forest floor that gives you a bird’s-eye view of the ancient canopy. Getting There

Most visitors arrive via Kigali International Airport (KGL). From Kigali, it is a scenic 2-3 hour drive to Musanze, the gateway to the park. Private transfers and shuttle services are available.

What to Wear

For trekking, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, sturdy hiking boots, and rain gear. Gardening gloves are helpful for grasping vegetation. Earth tones are recommended.

Health & Safety

Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry to Rwanda. Gorilla trekking occurs at high altitudes (up to 4,000m), so be aware of altitude sickness. Always follow your guide's instructions.

Booking Permits

Gorilla permits MUST be booked well in advance, especially for the dry season. We recommend booking at least 3-6 months prior to your planned visit.
